The Hospital Christian fellowship is an international and interdenominational movement among all who directly or indirectly care for the sick. It aims to unite believers in hospitals in a fellowship of prayer and Bible study and in witness to their colleagues and patients. Its evangelical outreach include the distribution of literature, personal counselling, home and hospital meetings, Bible studies and prayer, leadership training, retreats, luncheons, pot-lucks, banquets, local, national, and international seminars, conventions and conference, tapes, movies etc. National Fellowships worldwide are linked together by the International Hospital Christian Fellowship. Membership is open to all Christian Fellowships and Unions in the medical field provided they include in their Constitution an adequate Statement of Faith. Individual Membership is offered in countries where no Fellowship exists or where National Fellowships are not yet members of the International Hospital Christian Fellowship.
In 1936 Francis Grim, a Christian businessman, daily visited his elderly father in a local hospital. During these visits he noticed that patient’s physical needs were well taken care of but their spiritual needs were largely ignored.
Alarmed and concerned about this lack of spiritual care he began to teach a small group of student nurses how to share their faith in Christ.
This was the beginning of what eventually became a worldwide movement among health care workers. Francis Grim, and later many others, traveled extensively around the world, visiting hundreds of hospitals, encouraging Christian employees, physicians and volunteers, teaching them how to share the Gospel with their patients and fellow workers.
Why A Hospital Christian Fellowship?
BECAUSE more people pass through the hospitals of the world each year than through its churches. While in hospital, they are often in a condition of mind and heart to readily listen to the Gospel message.
BECAUSE the ministry of Jesus Christ was directed to the whole man: body, soul and spirit, and He commissioned His disciples to continue the same ministry in His Name. Today medical science recognizes that the patient’s peace of mind may contribute greatly toward his physical recuperation.
BECAUSE the Holy Spirit is doing a powerful worldwide work among doctors, nurses, paramedical workers and others in related professions.
BECAUSE members of the Healing Team, particularly those employed in the modern hospital, from an integral unit. Collaborating as they do on a professional level, it is natural for them to co-operate in Christian witness.
BECAUSE all sections of the hospital and distract staff should be cared for, if one group is neglected, it will weaken the overall spiritual tone in the Team.
BECAUSE a united witness for Christ makes a profound impression on unbelieving colleagues and patients.
BECAUSE fellowship among believers is urged by our Lord Jesus Christ and has already proved of inestimable value to Christians in the service of medicine. The Word of God declares that the members of the Body of Christ while differing in function, are inter-dependent and are on in Him.
